The Model One is the first watch from British micro brand Alkin. Founded by award-winning contemporary furniture designer and watch collector Charlie Fowler, Alkin is born out of a long-held desire to build a brand uncompromising in it core values of high quality, democratic design that will stand the test of time.
These fundamental principles have been paired with an understated, design-led style that consciously retains all the key elements of a traditional field watch archetype. In this approach Charlie has sought to create an honest, enduring aesthetic that will always be the mark of the Alkin brand.“
“The name Alkin derives from old English and means ‘of all kinds’, which represented my desire to develop watches with a broad and lasting appeal” says Charlie. “I’m passionate about products that are build to last and go on a journey with you, but it’s often hard to make this available to everyone.”
From the outset, the Alkin Model One was intended to be an accessible automatic designed with longevity firmly in mind.
Charlie recognises the impact of just creating more stuff, so has put the sustainability of the Alkin brand central to the business mission. Fundamentally, designing a product that is rooted in longevity is key to keeping the product in use for as long as possible. The quality of
the components and a reliable, widely used movement that can be very easily serviced or repaired are essential factors. In addition to this, Charlie has chosen to use German made,
vegetable-tanned leather straps that use organic tanning techniques instead of the immensely harmful and polluting chromium tanning process most commonly used in commercial leather production. The Model One will also ship in a vegetable-tanned leather travel pouch that can be used throughout the watch’s lifetime, instead of elaborate packaging that will lie idle in a drawer. Before alkin launches on Kickstarter the business will also sign up to 1% For The Planet in which 1% of gross profit will be annually donated to environmental causes.
